Which bag is best for the environment?
According to a study by the University of Chemistry and Technology commissioned by the Ministry of Environment, it is a reusable polyester bag. However, any bag that lasts as long as possible is better than a disposable version, regardless of the material it is made from.
The study focused on six types of bags: lightweight plastic (HDPE), rigid plastic (LDPE), paper bag with strap handle, textile polyester bag (PES/PET), which won in the test, and two variants of textile bags, made from ordinary and organic cotton.
How did the fabric bag perform?
Life cycle analysis surprisingly showed that "cotton bag has higher environmental impacts than polyester bag, even when made from organic cotton," confirms Vladimír Kočí from the Faculty of Environmental Technology at UCT in the study.
The main reason why these bags ranked second is the damage caused during the cotton growing phase. However, it is the best-rated bag made from natural materials.
Definitely, every multiple use of a bag reduces its impact and limits waste generation. So if you do buy a disposable bag, try to use it until it tears. And forget clever polyester or fabric bags at home as little as possible, don't lose them and use them repeatedly.
